Raising the Bar!
At Families in Action, we’re on a mission to improve the quality of Oakland Public Schools, especially for Black, Brown, and underserved students.

Currently, only 2/10 Black and Brown students read at grade level, 1/10 are proficient in math, and around 1/2 students graduate eligible to attend California state colleges and universities.
FIA is working toward an Oakland where 80 percent of all student groups will be college ready by 2034.
We'll do this by fostering collaboration and bridging the gap between families, schools, and policymakers.

Our Work
Building Community Leaders
Through our leadership institutes, 1:1 coaching, and education campaigns, we train parents, students, and teachers on practices that will help their schools improve student academic outcomes.
Raise the Bar
Partnering with school leaders to develop strategies connecting parents to their students’ education journey.
Family Leadership Institutes
Empowering parents with advocacy skills to support their children’s academic success.
Lit For Literacy
Partnering with schools to build family literacy champions who build their leadership and learn reading strategies to make a difference at home and at school.
Student Agency
Changing outcomes through empowering youth leaders to build agency with their peers to understand the racial disparities in college eligibility and the tools and knowledge to self-advocate in 10 district and charter schools.
Building Civic Power
Facilitating connections between parent and student leaders and local policymakers to address school and community issues. Hosting candidate forums during elections to engage with school board and city council candidates.
