We are excited to launch FIA’s Summer Leadership Institute 2023, a coalition of family and youth leaders from across Oakland charter and district schools. Join a community of leaders who are committed to lifting our voices, sharing our stories, and fighting to increase access to quality schools for all of Oakland’s students. 

During this institute, Parent and youth leaders will learn about the current status of  Quality and equity in Oakland, the political dynamics of Oakland education, and what is at stake in the November Oakland D5 election. Parent and youth leaders will leave motivated to build their own power at their school sites and in their communities.

Institute Overview Materials

 

Session 1: Power respects power.

In session 1, leaders will review FIA’s Unspoken Pandemic Report findings, agitating them on the change we need to see, and introducing key elements of FIA’s strategy to respond: Raise the Bar Campaign; Lit for Literacy, & A-G Campaign

Session 2: Leaders have followers.

In session 2, leaders will understand FIA’s definition of “leader” & “leadership”; will be knowledgable about the two primary tools of organizing: self interest and relationship; and develop a plan of action to develop their network of relationships through 1:1’s and social media.

Session 3: Power is organized people.

In session 3, leaders will have a deep understanding of how power can be moved in public by their school community through relationships.

Session 4: Structures channel power.

In session 4, each school has parent team will identify a turnout a turn out goal for their school, will commit to expanding their leader team and organizing plan to reach their turnout goal (1;1’s, House Meetings, Data Assemblies) .
