Candidate Forum Profile – VanCedric Williams

(VanCedric at his weekend Block Walk)

Why are you running for re-election?

Because I’m proud of the fantastic work the principals are doing in District 3. They focus on instruction, build a productive and equitable school climate, promote collaboration and professional learning among teachers to confront the reality of systemic racism, use the community school model to transform learning environments for students, and encourage parent participation, leading a model of shared decision-making commitments.

What are your priorities if elected?

My priorities are, in no particular order, chronic absenteeism, foster and unhoused youth, increasing targeted supports to increase academic outcomes for all students, transitional, workforce, and affordable housing for youth, employees, and families, continuing the transformative work of community schools, and growing college and career CTA programs.

In your district, what are the greatest educational priorities?

The needs are the same for my district and OUSD.

What are your main budget priorities?

I want to pay classified staff $30 per hour. They are among the least well paid staff in the school district.
I also want to reduce central office spending by 10% and reallocate any savings to school sites. I will also continue to support the OUSD Chief Business Officer.

(VanCedric and his fellow board is celebrating teachers of the year)

How will you support both district and charter schools?

I will support both the district and charter schools by advocating for transparency and accountability.

What are the biggest challenges you will face if you are elected to a second term?

The biggest challenge we face is effective school board governance. We need board members that are working to become better governors– not operators– of our school district.
