How can we help POC students and their parents be better represented and provide resources to help their children pursue a better education? We dive into this in on our latest podcast episode. FIA Talks is an opportunity for our youth, parents, educators, and community to voice their opinions on current issues and important topics. Our seventh podcast was streamed on February 3 and it features Michael McDaniel Jr, FIA’s Lead Family Organizer and Political Director. Click here to watch!
Michael was born and raised in Oakland, and his goal is to pursue better education for all of our Oakland community. In this podcast, we talk about an unspoken pandemic regarding Math and English proficiency rates for our Black and Brown children. We also take a dive into the most recent A-G Data highlighting the slight improvement but still work needed to make sure each and every single Oakland student has the choice to go to a 4-year college.
We also invite you to our report release, “The Unspoken Pandemic: Oakland’s Education Crisis” on Thursday, March 2 from 6:00-7:30 pm. RSVP HERE. It has been two years since we have had a picture of student learning across our city. This report looks at how students are faring in their reading and math achievement and what impact the pandemic had on graduation and A-G college eligibility rates.
